Percentage calculator
Percent Yield Calculator
Percent yield compares the amount of product actually obtained in an experiment with the maximum amount predicted by theory.
Percent yield
80%
Actual yield as a percentage of theoretical yield.
Formula
(Actual Yield / Theoretical Yield) × 100Step-by-step calculation
- 1
Enter the actual yield obtained.
- 2
Enter the theoretical yield expected.
- 3
Divide actual yield by theoretical yield and multiply by 100.
Formula
Percent Yield = (Actual Yield ÷ Theoretical Yield) × 100
How to calculate it
- Record the actual yield obtained from the experiment.
- Determine the theoretical yield predicted by the balanced reaction and limiting reactant.
- Divide actual yield by theoretical yield and multiply by 100.
A reaction produces 8 g of product
Values: Actual yield = 8 g; theoretical yield = 10 g.
Result: 8 ÷ 10 × 100 = 80%.
Frequently asked questions
Can percent yield be greater than 100%?
Yes. It can happen because of impurities, residual solvent, moisture, measurement errors or an incorrect theoretical-yield estimate.
Can theoretical yield be zero?
The percentage-yield formula cannot be evaluated when theoretical yield is zero because division by zero is undefined.
Do actual and theoretical yield need the same units?
Yes. Convert both quantities to the same unit before calculating their ratio.
